Dog Days Camp is a unique program designed to build confidence and knowledge about responsible dog ownership and trail stewardship for kids in grades 3-6. This camp partners with Marin County's finest dog trainers and meets with local dog rescuers, Golden Gate Parks Conservancy staff, and other experts to explore the trails and learn what's involved in choosing the right trails for hiking with dogs, how to walk dogs properly, and all the etiquette involved with sharing trails with wildlife, other people, and their pets. The goal is to keep trails open for our furry friends by creating good stewards of the land and responsible dog owners. Campers don't need to have or bring their own dog - all campers' dogs are shared at camp, so every child will have a chance to walk one or more dogs every day. Camper families can apply for their dogs to attend through a screening process developed by the camp's dog training expert. Once approved, campers can bring their own dog to camp at least one day per week. The camp also explores the natural history of coyotes through meetings with wildlife experts, learning how to coexist peacefully with them and tips for keeping pets safe from these majestic creatures who help keep rats at bay. Litter clean-ups are part of the service learning component. Past trainers have included Michelle Stern, Ally Stoops, Tricia Breen, Trish King, Rebecca Bradford, and Kathleen Burke. Many families use this camp as a way to figure out whether their kids and family are dog ready!
