This provocative Upper School course examines art movements and artists who challenged conventions, broke rules, and used their work to question authority and social norms. Students will study movements such as Dada, Surrealism, Punk, Street Art, and contemporary activist art, analyzing how artists have used creative expression as a form of rebellion and social commentary. The course explores the historical contexts that gave rise to these movements and examines the techniques, philosophies, and impacts of revolutionary artists. Through discussions, research projects, and creative assignments, students will consider questions about the role of art in society, the boundaries of artistic expression, and how creative work can challenge power structures. Students will also create their own works inspired by these movements, experimenting with unconventional materials and methods.
