Tales for Tails is a unique reading program that welcomes children of all ages to visit the Richmond SPCA's Robins-Starr Humane Center and read to pets in the adoption lobby. This program provides a special way for children to practice reading skills while providing interaction and enrichment to dogs, cats, and occasional bunnies waiting to find their new families. Children can bring their own books or select from the Richmond SPCA's collection. Reading to shelter pets increases motivation to read, develops self-confidence, and improves fluency in a non-judgmental environment. The animals provide an unbiased, patient audience that welcomes readers of all skill levels. This experience helps foster compassion and involvement in animals' lives while making reading more fun and engaging. Repeat visitors earn rewards - pick up a 'boop the snoot' bookmark from the adoption desk, and on your fifth visit, redeem it for a prize. The program is available whenever the adoption center is open, making it a flexible and accessible activity for families.
