Join us for a fascinating Coffee Hour lecture featuring Dr. David Scott presenting on the History of Willis Wharf. For generations this location was called Downing's Wharf and was the seat of the Downing family of Northampton County. In 1853, Edward L. Willis acquired the property and began running a general store. Access to a deep and wide channel out to the ocean made this place an attractive center for shipping and commerce. By 1900, it was called Willis Wharf and was a busy town and a gateway to Hog Island. Come and hear about the history of this important maritime community and the families that helped it to grow and thrive. This free lecture offers a unique opportunity to learn about the rich maritime heritage of Virginia's Eastern Shore and the role Willis Wharf played in the region's economic and social development. Coffee and conversation begin at 10:30 AM. Reservations are requested.
