Opti Kids is a beginner sailing camp designed specifically for the youngest sailors ages 5-8. This four-session camp, held over two consecutive weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), introduces children to the water and sailboats through fun, confidence-building activities in the protected waters of Fishing Bay. With twenty or more kids in each session, campers grow in their comfort with water and boats through swimming with lifejackets, learning basic knots, playing games in the water like righting a capsized boat, and learning sail adjustments while sailing around pool toys. At least one parent or guardian joins the kids and instructors in waist-deep water for on-the-water instruction, providing a wonderful opportunity for families to learn together. The camp teaches boat setup and launch, finding the wind, righting a capsized boat, steering, sail trim, balance, avoiding the "no go zone," and water safety specific to sailing. Sailors are paired in Optimist dinghies during instruction, and FBYC provides all boats. Set in FBYC's rustic, unplugged environment with dirt roads, picnic tables, screen porches, and abundant wildlife, Opti Kids has been a gateway for hundreds of children to a lifetime of sailing and water enjoyment. Graduates are well-prepared for the Beginning Opti class at Junior Week.
