Junior Week Beginner 420 is a five-day sailing camp for sailors ages 12 and up who have outgrown Optimists and are ready for double-handed racing in Club 420s. This class teaches starting techniques, sail trim, boat speed, and basic racing strategy in preparation for regattas. The 420 Class is appropriate for older beginners with little or no sailing experience, as well as those with extensive experience. Beginners will be paired with more experienced sailors and will receive basic instruction, and will be given the opportunity to both skipper and crew a 420. Set in the beautiful waters of Fishing Bay on the lower Chesapeake Bay, campers sail in club-provided Club 420s and learn teamwork, communication, and the dynamics of crewed sailing. Beyond sailing instruction, campers enjoy swimming at beaches and on boats, weather lessons, knots, seamanship, and exploring nearby locations. Set in FBYC's rustic, unplugged environment with dirt roads, picnic tables, screen porches, wildlife, and ample outdoor space, Junior Week teaches not just how to sail but how to live on the water through crabbing, critter-catching, beach exploring, shells, aquatic life, oceanography, currents, tides, and sometimes how to have grit—all while growing in courage, friendships, and laughter. FBYC provides Club 420s for this program. Parents or guardians must provide lunch and supervision during the lunch hour (12-1 PM). Additional family activities are offered after 4 PM some days, and the week concludes with group pictures on Friday.
