Literature of Conflict is an Upper School academic course that examines how literature portrays war, social conflict, and human struggle across different time periods and cultures. Rising 11th and 12th graders will read and analyze a diverse selection of novels, short stories, poetry, and memoirs that explore themes of conflict, from historical wars to personal battles. Through close reading, class discussions, and analytical writing, students will investigate how authors use literary techniques to convey the complexities of conflict and its impact on individuals and societies. The course encourages critical thinking about the role of literature in understanding historical events, moral dilemmas, and the human condition. Students will develop advanced literary analysis skills, engage in thoughtful discussions about difficult topics, and produce analytical essays that demonstrate sophisticated understanding of the texts. This intellectually challenging course is ideal for students interested in literature, history, social justice, and the humanities.
