That's a Relief introduces children ages 9-12 to relief sculpture and printmaking. This multi-week class explores the concept of relief—where images project from a flat background—through both sculptural and printmaking projects. Students create relief sculptures using clay, plaster, and found materials, and make relief prints using linoleum, foam, and cardboard. Projects are inspired by relief artworks in the museum's collection including ancient carvings, architectural details, and contemporary prints. The class develops understanding of positive and negative space, composition, and various relief techniques.
