This Upper School academic course explores the rich tradition of satirical writing from classical to contemporary works. Students will analyze how authors use humor, irony, exaggeration, and ridicule to critique society, politics, and human nature. Through close reading of satirical essays, novels, short stories, and other media, students will examine the techniques satirists employ and the social contexts that inspire their work. The course includes works from authors such as Jonathan Swift, Mark Twain, George Orwell, and contemporary satirists. Students will engage in critical discussions, analytical writing, and creative projects where they craft their own satirical pieces. This course sharpens critical thinking, analytical writing skills, and understanding of rhetorical strategies while exploring how satire functions as a powerful tool for social commentary.
