Junior Week Beginning Opti is a five-day sailing camp for sailors ages 6-10 with limited experience. Set in the breathtaking protected waters of Fishing Bay on the lower Chesapeake Bay, campers sail double-handed in club-provided Optimist dinghies and learn basic boat-handling skills with close supervision. This camp is perfect for juniors completing Opti Kids who want to continue their training, as well as other beginners. Beyond sailing, campers enjoy swimming at beaches and on boats, weather lessons, knots, seamanship, and exploring nearby locations. Weather permitting, they build up to the ability to explore using their sailing skills to nearby beaches, experiencing the joy of beaching their boats, swimming, and playing games. Set in FBYC's rustic, unplugged environment with dirt roads, picnic tables, screen porches, oysters, wildlife, and ample outdoor space, Junior Week teaches not just how to sail but how to live on the water—through crabbing, critter-catching, beach exploring, shells, aquatic life, oceanography, currents, tides, and sometimes how to have grit, all while growing in courage, friendships, and laughter. Sailors may be in this class for no more than two years. Parents or guardians must provide lunch and supervision during the lunch hour (12-1 PM). Additional family activities are offered after 4 PM some days, and the week concludes with group pictures on Friday.
