Join us for a fascinating Coffee Hour lecture featuring Tom Davidson, Chief Curator at the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, noted anthropologist, and co-author of Eastern Shore Indians of Virginia and Maryland. Tom will present a lecture entitled The Rise and Fall of Askiminikansen, an Eastern Shore Indian Town. During the Colonial era, the governments of Virginia and Maryland recognized over a dozen Indian towns on the Eastern Shore to protect their lands from English settlers. Askiminikansen was the largest of these Indian towns, and its story—from creation to destruction by settler encroachment—offers an important, often overlooked perspective on Eastern Shore history. This lecture presents a unique opportunity to learn more about this vital chapter in the region's past and the indigenous peoples who called the Eastern Shore home. This free lecture offers valuable insights into Native American history and colonial-era interactions on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Coffee and conversation begin at 10:30 AM. Reservations are requested.
