Advanced Kayak is designed for experienced paddlers ages 12-16 who have passed Rock & River Level III. This intensive program takes kayaking skills to the next level with our most experienced kayaking staff. Campers are treated more like peers than students, participating in all aspects of river running including unloading the kayak trailer, scouting rapids together, and setting safety for one another. The week typically begins with a warm-up lap on the upper James River, then progressively tackles more challenging sections, rapids, and lines. Staff know the James River at every level and help campers develop the same expertise. Depending on river conditions, campers may run Bosher's Dam or the Hollywood Slide. The program emphasizes river reading, advanced paddling techniques, and leadership skills. With a 4:1 ratio and expert instruction, this camp prepares future Passages kayaking staff.
