Junior River Guide Camp is an intensive week-long program designed for youth ages 10-15 that challenges participants to excel in whitewater navigation on the Upper and Lower James River using inflatable kayaks and rafts. This camp goes beyond basic paddling to develop boat navigation and leadership skills, with the ultimate goal of empowering campers to guide a raft of peers down the Lower James River in Richmond. Professional staff coach participants through the process of becoming whitewater guides, teaching them to be the leader and voice in the back of the boat, instructing peers on when to paddle, when to hold on, and when to celebrate. The program fosters a culture of feedback where campers are comfortable not getting it right the first time and using input from instructors and peers to improve. Participants will practice rescue skills, learn about James River history, and develop real-life skills in CPR and Swiftwater Rescue from certified instructors. The camp starts with basic boat control on beginner whitewater and progresses through giving commands, navigating novice rapids, and steering the boat. As the saying goes, 'You never run the same river twice,' and this camp teaches campers to adapt, lead, and build confidence through daily challenges on the mighty James.
