Campfire cooking is an essential outdoor skill taught in WinShape's Adventure Program (Elk Pack) at Mount Berry for campers who have completed 10th or 11th grade. During their two-week wilderness experience, campers learn to prepare all their meals over open campfires while on multi-day backpacking trips through North Georgia's beautiful mountain terrain. Under the guidance of professionally trained staff, campers develop practical cooking skills including fire building, fire safety, meal planning, and food preparation in outdoor settings. They learn to cook with limited equipment, manage cooking temperatures, and work as a team to prepare meals for their group. This hands-on experience teaches self-sufficiency, teamwork, and appreciation for food preparation while building confidence in outdoor living. Campers share the responsibility of carrying food supplies as part of their group gear and take turns preparing meals, creating a sense of community and shared accomplishment. The experience combines practical life skills with the joy of eating meals prepared by their own hands in spectacular natural settings.
Parents provide transportation to and from Mount Berry campus. Campfire cooking takes place during off-site backpacking portions of Adventure Program.
