Lower Character Dance summer classes introduce 8-12 year old students to the character dance styles featured in classical ballets. Character dance includes folk-inspired dances from various cultures that appear in story ballets, such as Spanish, Russian, Hungarian, and Polish dances. Students learn traditional character dance steps, rhythms, and styling while developing performance skills and cultural awareness. Classes emphasize musicality, storytelling through movement, and the theatrical aspects of character work. This complementary training enhances students' overall dance education and prepares them for performing character roles in ballet productions. Current SRB Lower Division students or new students with at least one year of ballet training are welcome. Appropriate dancewear is required, with character dance skirts being optional.
