In Summer Poetry Camp at Sabot, rising 6-8 middle school students will have the opportunity to discover and nurture their inner elegist through reading, analyzing, and creating poetry. Students will explore poetry spanning the history of the English language, from Shakespearean sonnets to modern works by the likes of Maya Angelou and Seamus Heaney. Drawing inspiration not only from these titans of poetry but also from the lush natural landscape of Larus Park and Sabot's historic campus, students will develop their own poetic voice and style. The camp emphasizes the idea that poetry is a matter of life, not just a matter of language, as expressed by Lucille Clifton. After a week of writing, workshopping, and analyzing poetry, students will present their work and leave camp with a portfolio of their writing. This full-day camp runs from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM with optional extended day available.
