Junior Week Intermediate Opti is a five-day sailing camp for sailors ages 8-12 who have completed Beginning Opti or have some boat handling and sailing experience. Sailors sail single-handed in their own Optimist dinghies and learn more about boat setup, sail trim, and seamanship skills like knots, weather, and boat handling that they can use to explore with their group further away from shore to remote beaches and sandbars. Set in the beautiful protected and deeper waters of Fishing Bay on the lower Chesapeake Bay, this camp combines sailing instruction with swimming at beaches and on boats, weather lessons, knots, seamanship, and exploring nearby locations. Beyond sailing, campers experience FBYC's rustic, unplugged environment with dirt roads, picnic tables, screen porches, wildlife, and ample outdoor space, learning not just how to sail but how to live on the water through crabbing, critter-catching, beach exploring, shells, aquatic life, oceanography, currents, tides, and sometimes how to have grit—all while growing in courage, friendships, and laughter. Sailors must bring and use their own Optimist (a few may be available to charter through FBYC by contacting juniors@fbyc.net prior to camp). Parents or guardians must provide lunch and supervision during the lunch hour (12-1 PM). Additional family activities are offered after 4 PM some days, and the week concludes with group pictures on Friday.
